In 2011, we have new classes at Yarn Explosion and repeats of many of our popular classes and workshops.  You have asked for new sock classes, lace classes, advanced sweater classes, classes to learn new knitting techniques, and needlepoint classes and we have been working hard on shop models and schedules to fulfill your wishes!

Below are descriptions of some of the classes we offer.

KNITTING CLASSES

 

 

GENERAL KNITTING "Sit ~ N ~ Knits"

Tuesdays:  10 ~ 12pm  &  1:30 ~ 3:30 pm

Wednesdays:  1:30 ~ 3:00 pm

Come and enjoy this time together…knitting and socializing. 

The “Sit & Knit” sessions are free and everyone is invited!

 
 
 
BUTTONHOLES:

If you have avoided knitting sweaters that have buttonholes, this is the workshop for you. 

Brenda will be teaching several different techniques for making buttonholes. 

Students will need to bring worsted weight yarn, needles, and paper and pen for taking notes.

 
 
 

TODDLERS CABLE SWEATER:

Brenda will be using the Sirdar Book Little Stars and Stripes #370 for this 4 week class. 

(The same book is used for the Toddler’s Lace Sweater.)  While learning the basics of knitting

a cardigan sweater you will also be learning how to knit several different cable patterns, read

a graph chart, learn about stitch guage, and how to finish a sweater.  You can choose from

a newborn size to 7 years old.  Students are asked to bring worsted weight or DK yarn for

practice, needles, paper and pen to the first class. 

There will be homework during this series of classes. This is an Advanced Beginners Class.

 
 
 
TODDLERS LACE SWEATER:

While learning how to knit a lace pattern, students will also learn the basics of knitting a

sweater and how to finish the garment.  Brenda will be using the Sirdar Book Little Stars and

Stripes #370 (same book for the Cabled Toddlers Sweater Class).  Customers are asked to

bring worsted weight yarn, needles, paper and pen to the first class.  There will be homework

during the class.

 
 
 
TOE UP, 2 SOCKS AT ONE TIME, MAGIC LOOP METHOD:

Becky will be teaching students how to knit both socks at the same time Magic Loop Method. 

When you know how to knit a sock from the toe up, you never have to worry about having

enough yarn to finish your socks.  Students will need one #1, 40”  

circular needles.  Students are strongly urged to use Addi’s Lace Turbo Circular Needles. 

This is an intermediate class, students MUST have previous experience with basic sock knitting.

 
 
 

CROCHET EDGES FOR KNITTERS:

Have you ever avoided a sweater pattern because it was finished with a crochet edge? 

Then this is the class for you.  Brenda will be teaching two very popular crochet stitches, the

Crab and Clam stitches to finish the edge of a knitted sweater. Prior knowledge of crocheting

is not necessary.  HOMEWORK:  Before class, using worsted weight yarn, knit two 6” x 6”

stockinette squares. Supplies: Size H crochet hook.

 
 
 
 EVENTIDE SCARF WITH BEADS:

Becky is teaching this beautiful Crossed-Stitch Lace (broomstick lace) scarf.  You will also be

learning how to knit with beads. Students will need over 400yds of fingering weight yarns. 

You will need to purchase 3, 6” tubes of 6/0 Czech beads.  It is recommended that the beads be

purchased at A C Moore.  You will also need a collapsible beading needle or a dental floss

threader.  Project is knitted on size 7 straight needles.  HOMEWORK:  Before class you must

string 554 beads onto your yarn.  DO NOT CUT THE YARN!!!

This class is an intermediate level class.

 
 
 
KNITTED MARKET BAG:

You will have the cutest bag at the Farmer’s Market when you are carrying this beautiful and

practical knitted Market Bag.  Students will be learning two new knitting stitches.  Requires

540 yds of sport weight 100% linen.

This class is for the adventurous advanced beginner knitter.

 
 
 

KNIT A BUNNY:

Knitting toys for children has become one the hottest trends in knitting.  Knitted toys are fun

for children to play with and make a wonderful gift, especially in an Easter Basket.  Students

 must have basic knowledge of the knit and purl stitches.

Class size limited to 6.

 
 
 

ENTRELAC SCARF:

Entrelac is a knitting technique that produces a fabric with a woven appearance.  The Entrelac

 scarf class is an intermediate level class. 

Free, plus cost of materials.  Class size limited to 6.

 
 
 

LOOPY SCARF:

The Loopy Scarf is a fun technique that makes a beautiful scarf.  Jane’s choice of yarn for this

scarf is Colinette’s ISIS , a chenille yarn that is available in gorgeous spring colors. 

This scarf will certainly add style and color to your spring wardrobe.  This class is for an

intermediate knitter. Free, plus cost of supplies. Class size limited to 6.

 
 
 

HOW TO READ A KNITTING PATTERN:

Our students and customers have asked for this class and now we are able to offer HOW TO

READ A KNITTING PATTERN as part of our skill building workshops. From the beginning

of a pattern, through the abbreviations, and until the end Brenda will explain the SOMETIMES

confusing language of pattern reading.  Class size limited to 8. 

Students should bring pen and paper for taking notes.

 
 
 

KNITTING WITH BEADS, THE ICE QUEEN COWL:

Becky is back (again!) and teaching this new class at Yarn Explosion.  You will be learning to

knit with beads to make this lovely cowl.  The shop model for this class is knitted using

Swarovski Crystal Beads and Rowan’s Kid Silk Haze.  Other suggestions for the lace weight

yarn are Colinette’s Parisienne Kid Mohair or Filatura DI Crosa’s Superior.  This class is for

the intermediate knitter with basic lace knitting experience.  Class size limited to 8.

 
 
 

YOUR FIRST SWEATER CLASS:

Susan will be teaching you the basics of knitting your first sweater.  The sweater is from Classic

 Elite’s New Harbor, the pattern is Open Cardi.  The class is designed to knit the back, a front,

 and a sleeve, and the finishing of your sweater.  The shop model is knitted using Classic Elite

Yarn’s Classic Silk. Class is free, plus supplies. THERE IS HOMEWORK TO PREPARE FOR THIS

CLASS. Class size limited to 6.

 
 
 

TEDDY BEAR & FAIR ISLE SWEATER SET:

This adorable teddy bear is wearing a Fair Isle pullover sweater.  Students will be learning

 multiple skills: Fair Isle knitting (using multiple colors of yarn), how to read charts, and

 finishing.  This pattern uses Berroco’s Comfort and pattern book #269.  There is also a pattern

 for an infant-12 mos. Fair Isle cardigan that matches the bear’s sweater.  What a great present

 for a child, a knitted sweater and a teddy bear with his own matching sweater. 

Class size limited to 6.

 
 
 

STEEKS:

Steeks allow you to make a sweater circularly, so that you can work the color pattern from

the knit side throughout. Becky will be teaching this class using a yoke pattern sweater. 

Becky is recommending that students use Brown Sheep’s Lanaloft, worsted weight, 100%

 wool. This class is for the experienced, intermediate knitter with knowledge of color work

 knitting.  Class size limited to 6.

 
 

GARDEN GLOVES:

Learn to knit gloves and learn how to use double pointed needles.  The gloves use 2 balls of

Cascade’s Fixation yarn. Class size limited to 6.

 
 

KNIT ONE BELOW SCARF:

Marilee will be teaching this technique of knitting made popular by Elise Duvekot’s book

Knit One Below.  This class will be teaching the Column Pattern using 2 colors of yarn

that enhances this unique style of knitting.  This class is for an intermediate student. 

This class is free, plus the cost of supplies.  Class size limited to 6.

 

BEGINNING SOCK CLASS:

Students will be learning the basics of knitting socks using worsted weight yarn and size 7

double pointed needles.  Class size limited to 6.

 

LACE CLASS:

Brenda is again teaching her popular beginning lace class.  Students are able to choose from

 several lace patterns to create a lovely knitted lace face cloth.  THERE IS HOMEWORK TO

PREPARE FOR THIS CLASS.

 

MORE WORKSHOPS

Brenda Hundley teaches several one class workshops that give knitters

an opportunity to learn new skills in the craft of knitting.

 

 

GAUGE WORKSHOP:

Gauge is the key to making your sweaters fit.  Brenda will explain the importance of your

knitting gauge and how to adjust your gauge to fit the pattern.  HOMEWORK:  Before the

class, students are asked to knit a 5”x 5” square using worsted weight yarn and using the

appropriate needles as indicated on the ball band.  Leave the square on the needle, don’t bind

off. Bring this square to class and learn how to measure your gauge. 

 
 
 

OOPS! I MADE A MISTAKE:

Oops, I Made A Mistake is one of our most popular workshop classes.  Brenda teaches

you how to recognize mistakes and how to correct the mistakes.  Class size limited to 6. 

THERE IS HOMEWORK TO PREPARE FOR THE CLASS. 

Students are welcome to bring projects that need help.

 
 
 

SWEATER FINISHING:

The planning for the finishing your sweater begins before you even knit the first stitch. 

Brenda teaches the basics of finishing so that you are able to complete this important last step

to be able to wear your sweater. Class size limited to 6. 

THERE IS HOMEWORK TO PREPARE FOR THE CLASS. 

Students are welcome to bring works-in-progress for this class.

 
 

 

CROCHET CLASSES

 

OPEN CROCHET CLASS:

This class is open to all crocheters .  If you want to learn to crochet, need help with a pattern,

or finishing a crocheted edge on a knitted garment…this class is for you. 

 
 

CROCHET AN EASTER EGG:

It doesn’t matter if you decide to hang your crocheted Easter Egg on an ornament tree or

nestle it in an Easter Basket, the crocheted Easter Egg will become a treasured ornament for

many years.  Brenda will be teaching this class.  Students must have basic knowledge of

crocheting.  Class size limited to 6.

 

CROCHETED MARKET BAG:

Forget plastic bags and crochet your own tote for taking to the Farmers Market or running

errands.  The market bag is a great class for the beginner crocheter or a fun project for the

more experienced.  Class size limited to 6.

 
 
NEEDLEPOINT CLASSES

 

 

 

NEEDLEPOINT "SIT-AND-STITCH":

Wednesday Mornings ~ Time: 10 - 12

This class is designed for all needlepointers, whether you are a beginner or someone with

 experience.  You will learn the basics of needlepoint and new stitches to add texture and

interest to your needlepoint canvases.  You may work on a painted canvas or work a

needlepoint stitch sampler….it’s up to you!  Brenda will work with students to build on

their individual skills.

 
 

BARGELLO SAMPLER:

This Florentine Point Bargello is designed as an introduction to the art of Bargello.  If you are

new to needlepoint or have years of experience, you will enjoy learning seven classic

needlepoint designs and working with a vast variety of needlepoint fibers.

 
 
 

SUMMER NEEDLEPOINT CAMP FOR CHILDREN:

Lynn Mason will be teaching our Needlepoint Camp for Children.  For their first project,

students will be stitching a Stitch Tote Bag for youths.  With Lynn’s help, these totes are self

finished. Children will have several designs to choose from.  Students will be learning at least

2 stitches and have the satisfaction of learning a new craft and using their tote everyday. 

There will be homework to prepare for the second day of class.  The totes will be ordered in

advance of the class.  Class size is limited to 5 so call soon so that your child or grandchild

doesn’t miss this class. Parents or grandparents are welcome to sit in on the class.
